Types of Corrugated Cardboard

The definition states that “corrugated cardboard is a cardboard made from one or more layers of a fluted corrugated sheet which are glued between several layers of other paper or cardboard”. Alongside this definition exists the fluting board glued onto a single liner, this is also called “one-sided corrugated cardboard”.

The functionality of the corrugated fibreboard is provided by the shape of the fluting sheet. There is a distinction between the wavy and V-shaped fluting, with the former prevailing in use.

The type of corrugated fibreboard is defined by two dimensions:

  • fluting pitch (t)
  • fluting height (h)

As per the DIN 5468 standard, fluting is classified by dimensions as below:

Type Symbol Pitch [mm] Height [mm]
Extra coarse flute K 5,0 10
Coarse flute A 8,0 - 9,5 4,0 - 3,9
Medium flute C 6,8 - 7,9 3,1 - 3,9
Fine flute B 5,6 - 6,5 2,2 - 3,0
Midi flute D 3,8 - 4,8 1,9 - 2,1
Micro flute E 3,0 - 3,5 1,0 - 1,8
Mini flute F 1,9 - 2,6 0,6 - 0,8
Extra mini flute G 1,8 0,55

A flute

This is the oldest flute size and it delivers a very good dampening effect. In practice, it is very often used in the most durable types, usually as a component of the 7-layer CAA cardboard.

C flute

Smaller in dimension than the A flute, it is the most frequently used flute size and has very good universal properties. This type is also used in so-called heavy-duty 7-layer cardboards.

B - flute

This is used for less sensitive or self-supporting packaged products. It is frequently applied in combination with the C flute in 5-layer BC fibreboard, which is used especially in industrial packaging.

E - flute

Also known as “micro flute”, this is used in small-dimension packaging materials and in any application where the packaging is to bear quality print. This feature leads to its frequent use in combination with the B flute. The EB-flute provides good physical properties and is sufficiently smooth and straight for quality flexographic print
